Harvard
PON & ESSEC Irene conference
The Program on Negotiation (PON) at Harvard
Law School and the Institute for Research and
Education on Negotiation in Europe (IRENE) at
ESSEC Business School are delighted to present
a special conference, New Trends in Negotiation
Teaching: Toward a Trans-Atlantic Network. The
conference will be held on Monday and Tuesday,
November 14-15, 2005, at ESSEC Business School's
Cergy campus. The conference has two objectives:
first, to facilitate sharing of experiences
and ideas regarding innovative approaches to
teaching negotiation; and second, to develop
a trans-Atlantic professional network of negotiation
teachers and trainers. The conference will offer
a combination of plenary sessions, concurrent
topical sessions, and roundtable discussions.

Mediation in the former Yugoslavia
On the basis of teaching common to ESSEC and
Harvard students, during which the two groups
met in Paris, a research project on mediation
in Bosnia was set up and then extended to all
mediations in the former Yugoslavia.
This example provides a further illustration
of the synergy between teaching and negotiation
research. The same problem was submitted to
the two groups of students who, subsequent to
their meeting in Paris, worked in parallel,
under the direction of Kalypso Nicolaidis at
Harvard and Alain Pekar Lempereur at ESSEC.
Important guests participated in the seminar
(General Heinrich and Ambassador Wynaendts,
among others) shared their field expertise with
participants. Such a package was as enriching
for the participants as for the teacher-researchers
who managed the seminar.
